Starting and running a small business can be both an exciting and challenging journey. For many entrepreneurs, finding the right support and resources can make all the difference. In this interview, we sit down with Sonya, the owner of Sehgal Psychology and Consulting in Edmonton, Alberta. Sonya shares her insights on starting her business, the importance of culturally sensitive mental health services, and the impact of working with Business Link. Join us as we explore her experiences, challenges, and the valuable lessons she’s learned along the way.
What sparked your interest in starting your business?
I’ve always had a passion for wellness and holistic healing. In the traditional healthcare system, I found that clients often didn’t have access to wellness models when it came to mental health. After working in healthcare within a conventional model, I realized there was much more to healing that I wanted to explore. This led me to leave the mainstream path and establish my own practice, where I could learn about Western counseling and complement it with alternative holistic approaches like yoga.

You mentioned working with bicultural individuals. Can you elaborate on that?
In my practice, I enjoy working with people from all walks of life, and I often see clients who are BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color). There aren’t many culturally sensitive providers trained in this area, so I find that bicultural individuals seek me out because of our similar lived experiences. This allows us to explore aspects of cultural identity in relation to mental health, which has been very rewarding.
How do you envision your business making a difference in the community?
Mental health is an important topic, and I believe my business helps break down the stigma associated with seeking help. Since there aren’t many culturally sensitive providers in the community, I’m able to connect with individuals who may prefer working with someone who shares similar experiences. I also partnered with a South Asian nonprofit in Edmonton, Baba Nanik, to provide free therapy for those in financial need, which helps to break down barriers to accessing mental health services.

How did you hear about Business Link? What specific services or support did you receive from your Business Advisor?
I was looking online for guidance on how to operate a small business and found Business Link’s resources to be very helpful. I was able to connect with my Business Advisor, Carol. We had virtual meetings when I was starting my business, and she provided invaluable guidance. The Interactive Business Plan Builder was especially helpful, along with assistance in understanding GST and which services require charging it. My Business Advisor also helped me navigate funding opportunities, like the Alberta Canada Job Grant, for my training.

Can you describe your experience working with your Business Advisor?
My experience with my Business Advisor has been fantastic. We still maintain our relationship today. Having someone to lean on during the transition from a secure job to running my own business was crucial. She’s provided networking opportunities that have increased exposure for my business. For instance, she keeps me in mind for potential connections related to the services I offer. I remember feeling frustrated with tasks like building a website and navigating grants, but having Carol there to support me made a significant difference. She’s been there to answer my questions and provide support through the ups and downs.
What upcoming initiatives or projects are you looking towards?
I’ve loved working with individual clients, and now I want to bring couples into my practice by getting training in couples therapy. It’s something I’m passionate about, and I can’t wait to help couples strengthen their relationships. I’m also looking to introduce yoga into organizations for employee wellness. I truly believe everyone can benefit from holistic approaches, and I think yoga can play a big role in enhancing well-being at work. I’m working on setting up yoga classes that organizations can offer to their employees.
Sonya’s journey highlights the transformative power of passion and the importance of culturally sensitive mental health services in our community.
