Even though there is a lot of negativity about the economy in the media right now, it’s important to recognize that an economic downturn can be the perfect time for innovation and diversification. Why not look at this as an opportunity for change?

Often at the start of a year, we set goals; however, many times these goals are not a true reflection of what we really want. This is the perfect time to pause, and reflect on what your dream career really looks like!

If you truly want to move closer to your dream career, here are two great questions to ask yourself:

  • What do I love?
  • What am I great at?

Your Dream Job Doesn’t Exist: Create It.

If you are going to create yourself a new career this year, why not create one you truly want? Here’s a fun exercise to get your creative juices flowing: grab yourself a pencil and some paper (yes, an old-fashioned pencil) and just start writing down things you love or are great at. Also, don’t be afraid to ask people you know, “What do you think I am great at?” Keep this list handy, as over time you will find more items to add.

Another reason to keep the list nearby: the items on it will guide your next steps in creating your dream career. This might mean working as an employee doing something you love. It could mean starting a business or becoming self-employed, creating a job for yourself. Whatever the road to your dream career looks like, know you will need to invest in yourself.

“Investing in yourself is the best thing you can do. Anything that improves your own talents; nobody can tax it or take it away from you. They can run up huge deficits and the dollar can become worth far less. You can have all kinds of things happen. But if you’ve got talent yourself, and you’ve maximized your talent, you’ve got a tremendous asset that can return ten-fold.”
