Building Community Through Burgers and Shakes: Virginia’s Journey with Re:Grub
Meet Virginia Borges, the passionate co-owner of Re:Grub, a vibrant burger and milkshake restaurant with two locations in Calgary. Virginia’s entrepreneurial journey began with a desire to create a unique dining experience that brings joy and community together. We caught up with her in the Beltline location on 11th Ave SW to chat about her experience as an entrepreneur.
What initially sparked your interest in starting a restaurant?
I always wanted to have my own business. Coming to Canada from Venezuela as an international student, I didn’t have the resources but had the dream and willingness to learn. In 2015, I partnered with Jose, and we started Re:Grub. Initially, we aimed to create a trendy bar-like space for young people, but when we put the first donut on a milkshake, it went viral. Seeing the excitement and happiness from customers, especially kids, made me realize this was what I wanted to pursue.

What do you love most about Re:Grub and the work you do?
The smiles and reactions from our customers when they see our shakes are priceless. It’s incredibly fulfilling to see their joy. Additionally, working with a program to hire people with diverse abilities was a highlight for me. We had about 20% of our employees from this program, giving full-time jobs to those with different abilities. It was a period of immense learning and growth, both for me and the business.
How do you envision your business making a difference in your community or industry?
I see Re:Grub as a part of the community, not just a business. It’s about being present and supportive without focusing solely on profits. For instance, we help other businesses and keep our offerings affordable to ensure we can serve the community effectively. It’s about creating a space where everyone feels welcomed and valued.
As a small business owner, what do you love most about running your business in Alberta?
The community support in Alberta is incredible. Our customers are amazing, and their appreciation and enthusiasm make all the hard work worthwhile. Running a business here means being part of a supportive, engaged community that values local businesses.

How did you hear about Business Link?
I heard about Business Link from a friend who owns a tea company. I was looking to reshape Re:Grub’s vision and needed some guidance. She recommended Business Link, and I decided to reach out. They provided me with valuable resources and support, which were incredibly beneficial.
What services or support have you received from Business Link?
Through Business Link, I applied for the Canada Digital Adoption Program. Business Link made the process straightforward and trustworthy. They guided me through the application, and the support I received was of a very high standard.
How has Business Link helped you grow your business?
Business Link helped me understand and implement targeted marketing strategies. We are using the grant to enhance our online presence through advertisements on Facebook, Instagram, and improving our SEO. This is a new level of marketing for us, and it’s crucial for reminding customers that we’re here and what we offer.
The targeted advertising strategies we implemented with their help have already started to show positive results. Our brand’s online presence has improved, and we’re able to reach our customers more effectively. It’s another world of marketing that we’re excited to explore further.

Can you share any upcoming projects or initiatives that you are working towards?
We’re focusing on expanding our community involvement and enhancing our menu offerings. There are plans to open smaller shake bars and continue creating unique, fun experiences for our customers. We’re also looking to reintroduce our program for hiring people with diverse abilities.
What would you recommend to a small business thinking about using Business Link’s resources?
I wish I had known about Business Link sooner. It would have saved me so much time and effort. My advice to other small businesses is not to be afraid to seek help and share your challenges. Business Link respects your knowledge and helps you build on it with their extensive resources and data.
Virginia Borges’ story is a testament to the power of passion, community, and the right support. Re:Grub isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a place where smiles are made, and community ties are strengthened.
