Cheyenne Newman-Buckborough, the founder of Flower Power Gardening Company in Edmonton, Alberta, is on a mission to help people feel confident in their outdoor spaces. Through personalized garden coaching, maintenance, and design, she’s turning yards into places of joy, and teaching people how to do it themselves.

We spoke with Cheyenne about how her business got started, what she loves most about gardening, and how support from Business Link helped her grow Flower Power from the ground up.

“I enjoy encouraging people to get outside and spend more time in the garden.”

Evelyn: What inspired you to start Flower Power Gardening Company?

Cheyenne:  I was working in a horticulture shop, and I had so many people ask me questions about their plants and saying, “I wish you could come to my house and help me.” That’s when I realized I could actually build a business around it. Now, I get to do exactly what I love: helping people with their plants, educating them, and getting them excited about spending time outside.

Evelyn: What services do you offer?

Cheyenne: We do everything from garden design and planting to full garden maintenance. I also offer garden coaching, which is one of my favourite parts. It’s all about helping people understand how to care for their own outdoor space.

“Flower Power Gardening Company has the best clients. I love getting to meet people and see their spaces and really have an impact on their lives.”

Evelyn: What does garden coaching actually look like?

Cheyenne: It’s super individualized. I meet people where they’re at—whether they’re total beginners or experienced gardeners who just want guidance. We walk through their space together, talk about their goals, and come up with a plan. It’s about building their confidence and creating a garden that works for their lifestyle.

“I love being outside in the sunshine, in the rain. I love working with the plants and getting dirty. I just love the work that I do.”

Evelyn: What do you love most about the work you do?

Cheyenne: Honestly, I love it all. I get to spend my days outside, working with plants, and getting my hands dirty. And I have the best clients. It’s so rewarding to see people light up when they see their finished garden, or when they feel empowered to take care of it themselves.

Evelyn: You mentioned that the environment plays a big role in your work. Can you tell us more about that?

Cheyenne: Absolutely. A lot of people think environmental conservation is something only governments do, but what we do in our own backyards really matters. I try to encourage pollinators, build habitats for birds and wildlife, and use eco-friendly practices. It all adds up.

“Learning how to do marketing was really important.”

Evelyn: What were some of the challenges you faced when starting your business?

Cheyenne: I knew a lot about gardening, but when I started, I didn’t know much about running a business. Learning the paperwork, the structure, and the administrative side of things was a big learning curve. One of the hardest parts was figuring out how to connect with clients and market myself.

“Business Link ended up feeling like a really good friend. It’s been an incredible, free resource that helped me learn how to run a business.”

Evelyn: How did Business Link support you along the way?

Cheyenne: When I was just starting out, I did a bunch of Business Link webinars to learn how to structure and run a business. More recently, I went through their Digital Marketing Program, which was amazing. I worked one-on-one with a business strategist who gave me really tailored advice. She helped me create a marketing plan with specific steps and SMART goals that fit my business and my vision.

“Believe in yourself. Be courageous. Follow your dreams.”

Evelyn: What’s one piece of advice you’d share with someone starting a business?

Cheyenne: Believe in yourself. Be courageous. Follow your dreams. And absolutely reach out to the free resources that are available, like Business Link.

Evelyn: What’s next for Flower Power Gardening Company?

Cheynne: I just want to keep growing—meeting new clients, working in beautiful spaces, and inspiring people to get outside and get gardening.

Cheyenne’s journey with Flower Power Gardening Company is a reminder that with a little courage, a lot of passion, and the right support, growing a business can be as rewarding as growing a garden. Whether you’re just planting the seeds of your business idea or looking to strengthen your online presence, Business Link’s Digital Marketing Program offers free, one-on-one support to help you build a customized marketing strategy and reach more clients, just like it did for Cheyenne.
